Harry McKinney hiking on a wooded mountain trail

Meet Harry

I grew up in the Appalachian regions of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, where a love of the outdoors became part of who I am from an early age.

Some of my earliest memories involve hiking mountain trails with my father, exploring trout streams, and spending weekends discovering quiet places in nature.  That appreciation for meaningful environments carried into my professional life.

As an architect, business owner, and later a technology executive in the construction industry, I spent decades designing spaces, systems, and experiences intended to make people feel comfortable, connected, and cared for.

But another thread has always run through my life: creating memorable experiences for people.

Whether hosting gatherings, planning retreats, or organizing travel, I’ve always found joy in thoughtfully crafting experiences that bring people together.

The Journey Behind the Journey

.

Camping and RV travel became an important part of our family story.

When our children were young, camping gave us an opportunity to step away from busy schedules and focus on spending time together outdoors.

What began with tents eventually grew into camping with a pop-up camper and later RV travel.

As our children built lives of their own and career opportunities led us away from the rural community we loved, those adventures became less frequent. Years later, a visit to a nearby lake reminded my wife, Vicky, and me of what we had been missing.

We returned to camping and RV travel with renewed enthusiasm, creating some of our most cherished memories together. I loved planning the adventures; she loved making our camper feel like home.

After losing Vicky following a long battle with Multiple Myeloma, I came to appreciate those experiences even more. The memories we created together, and the restorative power of getting away into nature, continue to shape how I travel and how I think about helping others create meaningful experiences of their own.

Some of our best memories were created not by the destination itself, but by the time we spent together along the way.

Why Wayfound Adventures Exists

Some of life's most meaningful moments happen when we step away from our daily routines and focus on the people, places, and experiences that matter most.

Camping and RV travel gave those moments to my family for many years, and they continue to shape how I experience the world today.

Wayfound Adventures was created to help others discover those same opportunities for connection, adventure, and lasting memories.

Every itinerary I develop is based on firsthand experience.

I only recommend destinations, campgrounds, attractions, and dining experiences I have personally explored and believe are genuinely worth sharing.

My goal is simple: to help fellow travelers enjoy authentic, thoughtfully curated adventures without the stress and uncertainty that often come with planning them alone.

A carefully researched, ready-to-follow 5-day RV adventure, with three full days of planned activities through Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Rather than giving you another long list of things to see and do, I’ve brought the pieces together into a practical adventure you can actually follow—where to stay, what to do each day, where to eat, how long to allow, and how to get around.

The trip blends the energy of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg with quieter moments in the mountains—from a full day at Dollywood and sweeping views above Gatlinburg to breakfast beside a rushing mountain stream, an easy riverside walk into the national park, local restaurants, and some of my favorite Smokies discoveries.
